Description

The track follows the north bank of the river and passes through stands of young kauri, totara and associated native vegetation. Along the track, you pass the remains of a power house, built as part of a hydro-electric generation scheme which operated between 1930 and 1967.

The Wharepoke Falls and the larger Rainbow Falls tumble over basalt lava fields which flowed into the river valleys after volcanic eruptions.

This track equates to approximately 4,667 steps.

Getting there

The track begins in the Kerikeri Basin Recreation Reserve (off Landing Rd, accessed via the Heritage Bypass and Waipapa Rd) and from the Rainbow Falls, Rainbow Falls Road.

There is parking, picnicking and a BBQ area in the Kerikeri Basin Recreation Reserve (off Landing Road, accessed via the Heritage Bypass and Waipapa Road) and parking and picnic facilities at the end of Rainbow Falls Road.

Dogs are not permitted on the walking tracks in the Kerikeri Basin due to the risk they pose to kiwi and other wildlife.
