The Mangahorehore Route takes you
through a stand of Taraire

The Mangahorehore Route follows an old road through a taraire stand, and then descends to the Waipapa River Track near Camp Creek in about 2 hours.

This is a good day loop linking with either Walnut Track, Puketi Recreation Area, or Onekura Route.

Getting there

Puketi Kauri Forest is signposted from SH10 south of Kaeo and north of Waipapa. It can also be reached from SH1, north of Okaihau.

Please take care when you leave the State Highway as you will be travelling on unsealed roads.

The start of the track is from above the quarry site, 6km up the Mokau Ridge from the Waiare Road. Park on the roadside and walk or mountain bike to the track start. The Mokau Ridge is accessible to pedestrians or mountain bikers only.

Plan and prepare

  • Carry warm, waterproof clothing, and food and drink, even on short walks. Stout shoes or walking boots are advisable.
  • You may wish to boil water from the streams before drinking.
  • For longer tramps NZMS 260, 1:50,000 topographical maps are essential.
  • Leaving vehicles at road ends over night is not advisable due to the risk of theft.
  • Permits for hunting goats and pigs are available from DOC offices.
  • No dogs or fires due to risks to wildlife.
